“Enchantress of Numbers”

A villanelle for Ada Lovelace

.

With all the mathematics she’d been taught,

I guess it wasn’t too surprising when

she dreamed of building a machine that thought.

.

Her mother had made sure her brains would not

be lost to poetry, her father’s ken,

with all the mathematics she’d been taught.

.

A friend of Babbage’s, she wrote a lot

of notes about his Engine. Even then,

she dreamed of building a machine that thought.

.

Recursion and Bernoulli numbers brought

the first computer program from her pen

with all the mathematics she’d been taught.

.

She didn’t get to see the thing she sought,

though we may, in a year or two or ten.

She dreamed of building a machine that thought.

.

And though today the Engine’s been forgot,

today’s computer science shares her yen.

With all the mathematics she’d been taught,

she dreamed of building a machine that thought.
